This paper is mainly devoted to the study of an adaptive finite element method based on reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimates. In the first part of the paper the authors derive the \textbf{H}-\(\psi\) formulation of time-dependent eddy current problems; the equivalent weak formulation and its well-posedness are also given. Next, a coupled conforming finite element approximation to the \textbf{H}-\(\psi\) based formulation is introduced and the Helmholtz decomposition of the variational space is proved. In the last part of the paper the authors derive reliable and efficient residual-based a posteriori error estimates and establish several numerical experiments.
