The authors study the Euler equations for ideal fluid on a compact manifold and prove that in an appropriate sense the time \(t\) map for the Euler equations is a Poisson map relative to the Lie-Poisson bracket associated with the group of volume preserving diffeomorphism group. The difficulty due to one derivative loss is overcome by exploiting the smoothness in the Lagrangian representation and then carefully performing a nonsmooth Lie-Poisson reduction procedure.
