Classical orthogonal polynomials can be generated by a three-term recurrence relation with appropriately chosen initial conditions. Using the same initial conditions but shifted recurrence coefficients, one obtains associated orthogonal polynomials. This association concept is now generalized to a larger class of polynomials. The paper presents basic results on the theory and construction of such generalized associated polynomials, and it gives a number of example applications to problems related to, e.g., Clenshaw's algorithm or numerical integration.
