In earlier papers [J. Reine Angew. Math. 528, 201--233 (2000; Zbl 1056.11039); Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. IV Sér. 34, No. 1, 63--77 (2001; Zbl 1058.14032)] the author has computed the étale cohomology of period domains of finite fields. The paper under review extends these results to period domains over local fields in the case of a basic isocrystal for quasi-split reductive groups. The method of computation, similar to that in the earlier papers, is a spectral sequence argument based on an acyclic complex of étale sheaves on the complement of the period domain which the author has constructed. In contrast to the finite case the \(p\)-adic case requires working in \textit{R. Huber}'s category of adic spaces [``Étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties and adic spaces.'' Aspects of Mathematics, E30 Vieweg (Wiesbaden) (1996; Zbl 0868.14010)] and the computation of certain Ext groups to show that the canonical filtration on \(E_2 = E_\infty\) splits.
