The notion of a generalized complex manifold was introduced by \textit{N. Hitchin} [Q. J. Math. 54, 281--308 (2003; Zbl 1076.32019); Geometry with B-fields, Lectures at the `Geometry, Topology, and Strings', Santa-Barbara, (2003)] and [\textit{M. Gualtieri}, Generalized complex geometry, Ph.D. Thesis, Oxford Univ. (2003)], which is the global notion corresponding to generalized complex vector spaces. Let \(V\) be a finite-dimensional real vector space and \(V^*\) its dual. The space \(V\oplus V^*\) has a canonical quadratic form \(Q\) with \(Q(v+f)=-f(v)\) for \(v\in V\) and \(f\in V^*\). Its linearization is a paring denoted by \(\langle \cdot, \cdot\rangle\). Then the space with an \({\mathbb R}\)-linear automorphism \(J\) of \(V\oplus V^*\) such that \(J^2=-1\) and \(J\) is orthogonal relative to \(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle\) is called the generalized complex structure on \(V\). Apparently, the structure is an integration of two notions: complex structure and symplectic structure. This paper is devoted to a description of basic facts on generalized complex structures such as generalized complex subspaces and quotients, \(B\)-field transforms, generalized Lagrangean subspaces, etc., by clarifying the interplay of several related notions. One of the fundamental theorems is the classification theorem: every generalized complex structure is the \(B\)-field transform of a direct sum of a complex structure and a symplectic structure. The authors then raise the question how to define generalized complex submanifolds. First, a generalized almost complex structure is defined and then an algebraic condition of integrability is described, from which a canonical definition of submanifold structure is derived. Several examples are provided, which may be useful for further study.
