The trajectories of particles moving on a semi-Riemannian manifold in the presence of a time-dependent potential are called perturbed geodesics. Using the special flow of an associated family of index forms the authors present a version of the Morse index theorem in this setting. Then the generalized Morse index equals the total number of conjugate points.
