Congruences between modular forms on Shimura varieties such as Siegel modular varieties or Hilbert modular varieties have been studied using \(p\)-adic modular forms and overconvergent modular forms. Early work on these was based on the fact that the ordinary locus is an open dense subset of the variety. To deal with more general Shimura varieties where the ordinary locus may be empty, \textit{T. Wedhorn} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 32, No. 5, 575--618 (1999; Zbl 0983.14024)] introduced the \(\mu\)-ordinary locus, showing that it is open and dense for Shimura varieties of PEL-type. In this paper, the author studies Shimura varieties of unitary type. The main result is that an overconvergent modular form (satisfying a certain technical condition) on such a variety is classical, i.e., it can be analytically continued from a strict neighbourhood of the \(\mu\)-ordinary locus to the entire variety. Along the way, the author constructs certain canonical subgroups, and describes the relevant Hecke operators.
