The authors investigate the question of when the system of eigenvectors of an operator function M(\(\lambda\)), holomorphic in a certain domain satisfying \((M(\lambda))^*=M({\bar \lambda})\), forms a basis under some additional conditions. As a corollary they assert that the eigenvectors of the function \(L(\lambda)=A+\lambda I+\lambda^ 2B(\lambda)\) (here \(A^*=A\) is a compact operator, \((B(\lambda))^*=B({\bar \lambda}))\) that correspond to the eigenvalues lying in an interval (- \(\epsilon\),\(\epsilon\)) with sufficient small \(\epsilon >0\), are a basis in a subspace with finite deficiency. For the S. G. Krein pencil \(L(\lambda)=A+\lambda I+\lambda^ 2B\) (where \(A=A^*\) and \(B=B^*\) are compact operators), they prove the factorization with prescribed nonreal spectrum and the property of being a basis for the normal canonical system in the sense of \textit{A. G. Kostyuchenko} and \textit{A. A. Shkalikov} [ibid. 17, No.2, 38-61 (1983; Zbl 0531.47017)].
