Let A be an idempotent algebra and assume that the number of different n- ary term operations (i.e., the cardinality of the n-generated free algebra of the variety determined by A) is bounded by \(c^ n\) for some constant c. Then there can be at most one commutative binary term on A; and if there is one, then A (considered as a commutative groupoid with this operation) is a Płonka sum of affine modules over rings \({\mathbb{Z}}_ d\) with all d dividing some fixed odd number m. Moreover, all idempotent commutative algebras satisfying the above bound are described. The proofs rely on several previous papers of the authors.
