Let \(A=(A_ 1,...,A_ k)\) be a k-tuple of Hermitian operators on an inner product space X, and let \(\alpha =(\alpha_ 1,...,\alpha_ k)\) be the k-tuple of quadratic forms where, for \(x\in X\), \(\alpha_ i(x)=x^*A_ ix\). The authors study the nature of the range of \(\alpha\) (x) where x runs over a subset of X, the boundary of this range, and the relation with the joint spectrum. The authors also explore the connection between the geometry of the range and the simultaneous diagonalizability of the operators \(A_ 1,...,A_ k\).
