The existence and uniqueness of absolutely continuous solutions to the system \[ x'=f(t,x(t)) \quad \text{for a.a.}\quad t\in [0, L],\; L>0,\; x(0) = x_0\in \mathbb{R}^n \] is studied where \(f\colon [0,L]\times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n\) need not be continuous. A new existence result complements an earlier theorem by Bressan and Shen. The applicability is illustrated with several examples not covered by the previous literature. Uniqueness of solutions is proved for discontinuous systems of differential equations with piecewise Lipschitz continuous nonlinearities and assuming localized Bressan-Shen transversality conditions on the boundaries between different Lipschitz continuity domains. This result appears to be new even in the classical case of continuous nonlinearities.
