The considered Cauchy problem for the nonlinear damped wave equation is reduced to the following form: \[\begin{aligned}(\partial _t^2+ 2 \omega(r)\partial_t - \partial_r^2+ V(r))u =|u|^p/r^{p-1},\quad\text{for } t>0, \\ u(0,r)=\epsilon r f_0(r),\ (\partial_tu)(0,r) = \epsilon rf_1(r),\ u(t,0)=0.\end{aligned}\] The aim of this paper is to investigate if the interaction between the damping term and nonlinear source term can produce a shift of the Strauss exponent. This interaction is defined as \(V( r ) = -\omega^\prime( r ) + \omega( r )^2\). One proves that if the parameter \(p>1\) is less then a certain upper bound denoted \(p_0(5)\), the classical solution blows up in a finite time, and one shows bounds for the lifespan. For values of \(p>p_0(5)\), the existence result of a global solution is presented.
