Let \(G\) be a compact real Lie group with maximal torus \(T\). Then \(LG\) denotes the loop group, i.e., the group of maps from \(S^1\) to \(G\), and \(\Omega(G)\) denotes the group of those loops \(\gamma:S^1\to G\) for which \(\gamma(1)=e_G\) holds. The integral cohomology rings of \(LG/T\) and \(\Omega(G)\) are studied in detail, with particular emphasis on the case where \(G=SU_3\) and where the coefficient ring is \({\mathbb Z}[1/2]\). This is done using root systems, Weyl groups, Schubert calculus and relative Lie algebra cohomology. Furthermore, a combinatorial symbol \(\binom{m,n}{j}\) (for non-negative integers with \(j\leq m+n\)) is introduced and a number of combinatorial identities involving this symbol are deduced.
