Let \(f(X)=aX^2+bX+c\) be an irreducible quadratic polynomial with integer coefficients and discriminant \(D=b^2-4ac\). It is known that the roots of the congruences \(f(\nu)\equiv 0\) mod \(p\), \(p\) a prime, are uniformly distributed (see in case \(D<0\) \textit{W. Duke}, \textit{J. Friedlander} and \textit{H. Iwaniec} [Ann. Math. (2) 141, No. 2, 423--441 (1995; Zbl 0840.11003)], in case \(D>0\) \textit{Á. Tóth} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2000, No. 14, 719--739 (2000; Zbl 1134.11339)]). In the paper under review the author obtains an estimate for the discrepancy. For positive real number \(x\) the discrepancy of the fractional parts \(\{\nu/p\}\), where \(\nu\) is a root of \(f(\nu)\equiv 0\) mod \(p\), \(p\) a prime, is defined by \[ \Delta_f(x)=\sup_{0\leq u<v\leq 1}\left|\sum_{p\leq x}\sum_{u<\{v/p\}\leq v}1- (v-u)\pi(x)\right|. \] By applying Erdős-Turán inequality, the author proves that if \(D<0\), then \[ \Delta_f(x)\ll \left\{\frac{(\log\log x)^{19}}{\log x}\right\}^{\alpha}\pi(x) \] for any \(\alpha<8/9\) and the implied constant depends only on \(a, b, D, \alpha\).
