The symbolic calculus of Hilbert space operators with numerical radius bounded by one was studied by \textit{C.\,A.\thinspace Berger} and \textit{J.\,G.\thinspace Stampfli} [Am.\ J.\ Math.\ 89, 1047--1055 (1967; Zbl 0164.16602)]. Following this paper, the author studies the norm and numerical range of \(p(T)\), where \(p\) is a disk algebra function satisfying \(\sup_{\|z\|\leq1}|p(z)|\leq1\) and \(p(0)\) is known. He proves, for an arbitrary complex polynomial \(p\) the known estimate due to \textit{K.\,Okubo} and \textit{T.\,Ando} [Manuscr.\ Math.\ 16, 385--394 (1975; Zbl 0325.47008)] \(\|p(T)\|\leq2\sup_{\|z\|\leq1}|p(z)|\) for the operator norm and the estimate \(w(p(T))\leq\frac54\sup_{\|z\|\leq1}|p(z)|\) for the numerical radius.
