The author is concerned with polynomial approximation in Sobolev spaces. He obtains a Jackson's type inequality for the so-called cloud functions introduced by \textit{C. A. Duarte} and \textit{J. T. Oden} [Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 139, No.~1--4, 237--262 (1996; Zbl 0918.73328)]. The inequality is then used in order to obtain some error estimates in finite element method applied to a regularly elliptic boundary value problem.
