The main theorem says that if a function \(g\in L^p({\mathbb R}^N)\), \(1<p<\infty\), satiesfies the following condition \[ \sup_{n\in {\mathbb N}} \int\int_{\{| g(x)-g(y)| >\delta_n\}}\frac{\delta_n^p}{| x-y| ^{N+p}}\,dx\, dy \,<\infty \] for some arbitrary sequence of positive numbers \((\delta_n)_n\) such that \(\delta_n\rightarrow 0\) if \(n\rightarrow \infty\), then the function \(g\) belongs to the Sobolev space \(W^{1,p}({\mathbb R}^N)\). This assertion is strictly connected to the paper [\textit{Hoain-Minh Nguyen}, J. Funct. Anal. 237, No.~2, 689--720 (2006; Zbl 1109.46040), reviewed below], where a similar but stronger assumption on \(g\) was considered.
