A sequence \((a_{n})_{n}\) of elements of a group \(G\) is called a \(T\)-sequence if there exists a Hausdorff group topology \(\tau \) on \(G\) such that \(a_{n}@>\tau>>0\). In such a case the finest group topology with this property is called the group topology determined by the \(T\)-sequence \((a_{n})_{n}\). The author provides sufficient conditions for a sequence in an abelian group to be a \(T\)-sequence. A Hausdorff topological group \(G\) such that the von Neumann radical \({\mathbf n}(G)\) is non-trivial and finite is called almost maximally almost-periodic. Another result from this paper states that the direct sum of any infinite family of finite abelian groups admits an almost maximally almost-periodic group topology determined by a \(T\)-sequence. By investigating special sequences of Prüfer groups, the author proves that for \(p\neq 2\), \({\mathbb Z}(p^{\infty })\) admits neither a maximally nor a minimally almost-periodic Hausdorff group topology \(\tau \). Consequently \({\mathbf n}({\mathbb Z}(p^{\infty }),\tau )\) is finite and \({\mathbf n}({\mathbf n}({\mathbb Z}(p^{\infty }),\tau ))\) is strictly contained in \({\mathbf n}({\mathbb Z}(p^{\infty }),\tau )\).
