Refinable, especially refinable compactly supported functions are important for approximations by subdivision, hierarchical methods and, for instance, wavelet methods. In this paper, two-dimensional refinable functions are derived from spline spaces on the so-called four-direction mesh. Here, quartic and quintic splines are used, and they are such that they provide the maximal polynomial reproduction (of quartic and quintic polynomials in two dimensions) possible. The splines and the masks for the refinement equation are computed explicitly and also, for example, the span of their translates is given. This is of course important especially for their approximation properties and shows the usefulness of the computed splines.
