A moment-angle manifold is an \((m+n)\)-dimensional manifold \({\mathcal{Z}}_P\) with a canonical action of the torus \(T^m\) such that the orbit space of the action is a simple \(n\)-dimensional polytope \(P\) with \(m\) facets. The manifold \({\mathcal{Z}}_P\) depends only on the combinatorial type of the polytope \(P\). Therefore, it is possible to analyze the combinatorics of \(P\) by studying the algebraic topological properties of \({\mathcal{Z}}_P\) and vice versa. The Buchstaber number \(s(P)\) is a combinatorial invariant of a simple polytope \(P\), defined as the maximal dimension of subgroups \(H\simeq T^r\subset T^m\) that act freely on \({\mathcal{Z}}_P\). The invariant \(s(P)\) is a measure of symmetry of the moment-angle manifold. This paper is a survey on Buchstaber invariant theory. The author describes methods for calculating the invariant \(s(P)\) and explains how the invariant is related to other combinatorial invariants and constructions. He calculates the invariant for the class of simple polytopes with \(m=n+3\) facets. He also describes how Buchstaber invariant theory is related to matroid theory. Based on this relation, he describes the real Buchstaber number in terms of subcomplexes of the Alexander dual simplicial complex.
