The author establishes a quantitative approximation formula for the Lyapunov exponent of a rational function over a valued field. The rational function, of degree greater than one, is defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, complete with respect to a non-trivial absolute value, which may be non-Archimedean. The derivation of the formula, which is expressed in terms of the multipliers of the periodic points of the rational function, makes use of potential theory on the Berkovich projective line.
