A general two-reactant, two-product process is considered, and assumed invariant under some compact internal symmetry group. The crossing matrices for such a process are defined and information about the physical system is derived from a knowledge of the symmetry group alone. In particular the octal bracket is introduced and it is shown that all crossing matrices can be expressed in terms of the octal bracket. For the group \(\mathrm{SU}(2)\) the octal bracket reduces to the Racah coefficients. The remainder of the paper is devoted to the derivation of various properties of the octal bracket, crossing matrices and Racah coefficients. The exposition is very clear and all mathematical and physical assumptions are carefully stated. Because of its clarity, this paper should prove useful as an introduction to crossing matrices.
