Given a complex matrix \(A\), of size \(m \times n\), \(A^{-}\) denotes a generalized inverse of \(A\) and \(A\{1\}\) the set of all generalized inverses of \(A\). The main result of this paper provides two criteria for the invariance of expressions of the type \(KL^{-}M^{-}N\) with respect to the choice of \(L^{-} \in L\{1\}\) and \(M^{-} \in M\{1\}\), for \(K\), \(L\), \(M\) and \(N\) complex matrices of sizes \(m \times n\), \(p \times n\), \(q \times p\) and \(q \times r\), respectively. As an immediate consequence of this result, the authors obtain that all matrices of the form \(L^{-}M^{-}\), are generalized inverses of \(ML\) if and only if the product \(MLL^{-}M^{-}ML\) is invariant with respect to the choice of \(L^{-}\) and \(M^{-}\), which at the first glance looks to be a weaker condition than the requirement that \(MLL^{-}M^{-}ML=ML\) for every \(L^{-}\) and \(M^{-}\).
