The authors study prime rings and give new equivalent conditions for a prime ring satisfying a generalized polynomial identity. The new characterizations are internal and do not involve the central closure of the ring as in the Martindale characterization. In particular, such a ring \(R\) satisfies a generalized polynomial identity with coefficients from \(R\); the ring \(R\) has an element \(a\) such that \(a^2\neq 0\) and \(aRa\) is a PI-ring; \(R\) has a left ideal \(_RL\) such that \(\text{End}_RL\) is a domain of finite rank over its centre.
