Fünf Stufen des Mannigfaltigkeitsbegriffs werden gegeneinander gestellt: topologische Mannigfaltigkeit, triangulierbare M., ``Stern-M.'', \textit{Brouwer}sche M. (vgl. Math. Ann., Leipzig, 71 (1911), 97-115; F.~d.~M. 42, 417) und differenzierbare M. Von vier Dimensionen an gibt es Sternmannigfaltigkeiten, die keine Brouwerschen sind. Jede dieser Klassen ist in der vorhergehenden enthalten, und Brouwers Definition ist nicht unterteilungsinvariant. Einige weitere Angaben, keine Beweise.
