The authors study the two-dimensional Euler equations for flows of incompressible fluid in the critical spaces \(C^1(\mathbb R^2)\) and \(B^1_{\infty,1}(\mathbb R^2)\). The main result is that the corresponding Cauchy problems are ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard. This is proved by showing a contradiction with a result of \textit{T. Kato} and \textit{G. Ponce} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 2, No. 1--2, 73--88 (1986; Zbl 0615.35078)]. Related results are contained in recent preprints by \textit{T. M. Elgindi} and \textit{N. Masmoudi} [``Ill-posedness results in critical spaces for some equations arising in hydrodynamics'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1405.2478}] and by \textit{J. Bourgain} and \textit{D. Li} [Geom. Funct. Anal. 25, No. 1, 1--86 (2015; Zbl 1480.35316)], but the methods used are quite different.
