The paper under review is motivated by a series of five articles written by \textit{W. L. Edge} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 43, 302--315 (1937; Zbl 0017.18405); J. Lond. Math. Soc. 12, 276--280 (1937; Zbl 0017.32204); Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 44, 466--480 (1938; Zbl 0019.22903); Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 47, 123--141 (1941; JFM 67.0578.03); Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 47, 455--480 (1942; Zbl 0028.41503)], which were in turn reconsidered by \textit{G. Fano} in [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, VIII Ser., Rend., Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat. 3, 179--185 (1947; Zbl 0029.31503)]. The papers by Edge studied the fundamentals of the theory of nets of complex projective quadric surfaces. In particular, he studied in his third article of the series the scroll \(R_{C,\theta}\), where \(C\) is a quartic of \(\mathbb {P}^3\), \(\theta\) is a non-effective theta characteristic on \(C\), and \(R_{C,\theta}\) is the union of the trisecant lines to \(C\). The idea by Fano is that \(R_{C,\theta}\) is a special member of a family of octic scrolls \(R\) in \(\mathbb{P}^3\), namely that of the scrolls whose minimal model is the projectivization of a rank two vector bundle \(E\) over \(C\) with bicanonical determinant. In the present paper, the author studies this question from a modern point of view. The main result is Theorem 1.1. Let \(E\) be a globally generated, stable rank two vector bundle with bicanonical determinant on a non-hyperelliptic curve \(C\) of genus \(3\), with Jacobian of Picard number one. Denote by \(\overline {E}\) its dual span, which is the dual of the kernel of the evaluation \(H^0(E) \otimes \mathcal{O}_C \rightarrow E\). Let \(R\) be the scroll in \(\mathbb{P}^3\) defined by the tautological map of \(E\). In these conditions, a component of Sing\(R\) has multiplicity \(m > 2\) if and only if one of the following conditions holds: (a) \(m=3\). Then \(\overline {E} \cong E \cong T_{\mathbb{P}^2 | C} \otimes \theta\), where \(\theta\) is a non-effective theta characteristic. \(R\) is the scroll of trisecant lines to Sing\(R = C\) embedded in \(\mathbb{P}^3\) by \(| \omega \otimes \theta |\). (b) \(m=4\). Then \(\overline {E}\) is strictly semistable, Sing\(R\) is a rational normal cubic in \(\mathbb{P}^3\), and each line in \(R\) is bisecant to Sing\(R\).
