Automorphisms and cohomology of discrete groups (Q1922488): Difference between revisions

The author gives a method for constructing non-trivial classes in the cohomology of a discrete group \(\Gamma\) with coefficients in the field \(F_p\) with \(p\) elements. The method is based on finite automorphism groups of \(\Gamma\) (which is assumed to have finite cohomological dimension). In particular, if \(P\subset\text{Aut}(\Gamma)\) is a finite \(p\)-group then the (total) dimension of \(H^*(\Gamma^P;F_p)\) is a lower bound for the dimension of \(H^*(\Gamma;F_p)\). Here \(\Gamma^P\) is the subgroup of those elements in \(\Gamma\) which are fixed under all automorphisms from \(P\).
