A new variational method for the generation in computational mechanics is presented. It relies on the use of the invariants of the left Cauchy- Green tensor of the reference cell deformation into a current cell. Functionals defined as functions of these invariants are proposed and grids are obtained by minimization of these energy-like functions. Mechanical interpretations underlying the method are given. Finally, first results are shown that illustrate the behaviour of the method.
