The paper presents an analysis of the effect of the low wave number on scattering problems, with local absorbing conditions specified on simple shapes as on-surface radiation conditions. The analysis herein shows that the reduced significance of high modes at low wave numbers applies to problems with exact representation as well as with approximate boundary conditions. The authors are able to quantify this effect, providing guidelines for practical computation. The guidelines indicate that relatively small computational domains can be employed in most practical applications for the simple cylindrical and spherical geometries considered, in order to avoid excessive computational cost.
