This paper deals with a Monod type chemostat model in which the nutrient concentration input is periodically not continuously and also a time delay in the growth response to describe the lag involved in the nutrient conversion process is introduced. By the use of the discrete dynamical system determined by the stroboscopic map, existence of a microorganism-extinction periodic solution is established, which is globally attractive under some conditions on the impulsive period. Then, permanence of solutions to the model is shown. The results established in the paper illustrate how the delay in the growth response influences the extinction and the permanence of the microrganisms in the chemostat.
