This paper deals with a system of two delay differential equations, which models the variation of the density of a single species, divided into two patches. Each of the equations has a reaction term and a migration term, proportional to the difference of the densities, with the sign chosen so that the population goes from the more populated to the less populated region. Coefficients are time-dependent. Positive invariance, permanence and existence of globally attractive periodic solutions (with period equal to the period of the coefficients, when assuming that the coefficients are periodic) are established by means of differential inequalities, Lyapunov-Razumikhin functions and the Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem. The paper is in the line of previous work by \textit{E. Beretta} and \textit{Y. Takeuchi} [Bull. Math. Biol. 49, 431-448 (1987; Zbl 0627.92021)] and \textit{Y. Takeuchi} [Acta Appl. Math. 14, No. 1/2, 49-57 (1989; Zbl 0665.92017)].
