A multigrid algorithm with mesh ratio 2 for solving the Poisson equation is analyzed. Specifically \textit{R. Verfürth}'s algorithm [ibid. 60, 113- 128 (1984; Zbl 0548.65074)] is treated by Fourier methods. In this framework, the authors obtain estimates of the convergence rates for the rectangle which are better than Verfürth's results for arbitrary convex domains.
