The authors consider the class of boundary value problems \[ \begin{aligned} &u''+a(t)u'+b(t)u+h(t)f(t,u)=0,\;t\in (0,1),\\ &u(0)=u(1)=0, \end{aligned} \] where \(b\), \(h\) are singular at \(t=0,1\). The nonlinear term \(f\) is sign-changing and may be unbounded from below. The existence of nontrivial solutions of the above problem is obtained by using the topological degree of a completely continuous field. An application of their main result is given.
