We study 1-cohomology of discrete group actions on factors of type \(II_ 1\). Kazhdan's property T of discrete groups is characterized by closedness of each 1-cohomology class for its actions on factors of type \(II_ 1\) and other related cohomological properties. As an application, we show that each of SL(n,\({\mathbb{Z}})\), \(n\geq 3\), and Sp(n,\({\mathbb{Z}})\), \(n\geq 2\), has a continuous family of mutually non-cocycle conjugate free ergodic actions on the injective factor of type \(II_ 1\) by combining our method and results of M. Choda. Amenability of discrete groups is also characterized by cohomological terms in connection to actions on factors of type \(II_ 1\). For this purpose, we also introduce and compute entropy for discrete amenable group action on the injective factor of type \(II_ 1\), which generalizes Connes-Størmer entropy of automorphisms.
