The article discusses known results on the rigidity of Carnot groups using Tanaka's prolongation theory [\textit{N. Tanaka}, J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 10, 1--82 (1970; Zbl 0206.50503)]. The Tanaka theory is applied to investigate the rigidity of an extended class of \(H\)-type groups, called \(J\)-type groups. A rigidity criterion is obtained, giving rise to a rigid class of \(J\)-type groups which includes the \(H\)-type groups, and thus extends the results of \textit{H. M. Reimann} [Math. Z. 237, No.~4, 697--725 (2001; Zbl 0982.22013)]. The authors also construct a non-complex \(J\)-type group, which is non-rigid and does not satisfy the rank 1 condition over the reals.
