The principal result of the paper concerns the representation theory of the poset which is the union of three 2-element chains. It consists in the construction of a lattice of perfect elements as a sublattice of the modular lattice freely generated modulo linear equivalence. The prime quotients of this lattice are in 1-1-correspondence with the indecomposable preprojective representations. An explicit description of the structure of this lattice is given. In this way, the author establishes for this poset an analogue of the work of Gel'fand and Ponomarev on quadruples. The result is, in principle, based on representation theory and the technique of Coxeter functors. Yet, the author gives, whenever possible, derivations in the context of modular lattices. This includes some new results, given in Appendix A, on finitely presented modular lattices. Moreover, for this poset as well as for quadruples, the auther exhibits various lattice polynomials relevant for the construction of perfect elements but also for an analysis of the subdirect decomposition structure of the lattices associated with decomposable representations resp. free modular lattices up to \(p\)-linear equivalence. He systematically studies the relationship between these elements and their descriptions in terms of admissible sequences of indices. For the case of quadruples he also completly clarifies the relationship with elements obtained via the alternative approach using certain endomorphisms of the free modular lattice on four generators.
