Let \(C(X,E)\) be the vector space of all continuous functions from \(X\) to \(E\); let \(V\) be a directed upward set of nonnegative upper semi-continuous functions on \(X\); denote by \(CV_0(X,E)\) the set of functions \(f\in C(X,E)\) such that \(vf=0\) at infinity on \(X\) for each \(v\in V;\) and by \(B(E)\) the locally convex space of all continuous linear operators on \(E\). This note gives a sufficient and necessary condition for the compactness of the multiplication operator \(M_\pi\) on \(CV_0(X,E)\) induced by \(\pi:X\to B(E)\), when \(X\) is a locally compact Hausdorff space, \(E\) a Banach space and \(V\) a space satisfying that for each compact subset \(K\) of \(X\) there exists \(v\in V\) such that \(\inf\{v(x):x\in K\}>0\). The author also gives a sufficient and necessary condition for the compactness of \(M_\pi\) if \(X\) is a locally compact Hausdorff space, \(E\) a quasi-complete locally convex Hausdorff space and \(V\) a system of constant weights on \(X\).
