The authors investigate a four-dimensional quadratic vector field that is an extension of some three-dimensional system of Lorenz type. It has only one equilibrium, and the main objective of the paper is to prove that Hopf bifurcation occurs. This is done by means of the normal form theory introduced by Hassard et al. In this way, using \texttt{Mathematica 8.0}, the direction of Hopf bifurcation, the stability and approximate expression of bifurcating limit cycles are analyzed in detail. The concluding section presents some computer simulations. Note: The formula for the derivative of the crucial eigenvalue is not correct; moreover, its real part must be negative, in accordance with the fact that the real parts of all the eigenvalues are negative if the bifurcation parameter is greater than its critical value.
