[For part II see ibid. 217, No. 2, 501-520 (1998; reviewed above).] This paper is concerned with the behaviour of symplectic integrators for the numerical solution of nonlinear perturbed integrable systems \(x'= f_0(x)+\varepsilon f_1(x,\varepsilon)\), where \(x'= f_0(x)\) is Hamiltonian and nonlinear and the perturbation \(\varepsilon f_1\) is dissipative. It must be noticed that here the author extends previous results on analytic differential equations given in part I [Numer. Math. 77, No. 4, 535-547 (1997; Zbl 0885.65088)]. Assuming that the unperturbed system \((\varepsilon= 0)\) is integrable, i.e. that there exists an analytic canonical transformation to action-angle variables, the author shows that, under a strong non-resonance condition together with other assumptions on the averaged terms, the differential system admits an attractive invariant torus \(M_\varepsilon\) for small \(\varepsilon\) which attracts a \(\delta\)-neighbourhood of \(M_0\) with \(\delta\to 0\) as \(\varepsilon\to 0\). Furthermore, if a symplectic integrator is applied to the above differential system it is seen that the numerical flow has an attractive invariant torus \(M_{h,\varepsilon}\) for small stepsize \(h\), but the size can be much larger than the perturbation parameter \(\varepsilon\).
