Based on material from the archives of ETH Zurich the author describes the appointment in 1858 of Richard Dedekind to this institution. Unlike the procedures in Germany the position had been advertised and the two mathematicians from Göttingen, Dedekind and Bernhard Riemann, applied. Apparently due to his superior teaching abilities for the purpose of a technical school, Dedekind was preferred over Riemann, who had the stronger scientific record at the time.
