The main result in the paper is the following theorem. Let \(X\) be a connected complex manifold and \(C\) a compact connected analytic set in \(X\), \(q=\dim C> 0\). Suppose that \(C\) is projective. Then there is an open neighborhood \(V\) of \(C\) in \(X\) such that, for any holomorphic covering \((Y,\sigma)\) of \(X\) for which \(\sigma^{-1}(C)\) has no compact irreducible component, there exists a \(C^\infty\)-smooth exhaustion function \(\varphi\) on \(Y\) whose restriction to \(\sigma^{-1}(V)\) is \(q\)-convex.
