Motivated by the work of \textit{J. Agler} [Am. J. Math. 112, No. 1, 1--14 (1990; Zbl 0708.47020)], the authors give a characterization of \(m\)-isometric operators on a separable Hilbert space. Here, for a positive integer \(m\), an operator \(T\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) is called an \(m\)-isometry if it satisfies the identity \(\sum_{k=0}^m (-1)^{m-k} \binom{m}{k} {T^*}^k T^k=0\), where \(T^*\) denotes the adjoint operator of \(T\). Moreover, the authors characterize the unilateral weighted shift operators \(S_w\) which are \(m\)-isometries, with \(S_w e_n := w_n e_{n+1}\) for \(n \geq 1\), where \((e_n)_{n \geq 1}\) is an orthonormal basis of \(H\) and \(w=(w_n)_{n \geq 1}\) a bounded weight sequence.
