The main result of this paper asserts that every open subgroup of a complete Kac-Moody group over a finite field is contained, with finite index, in some parabolic subgroup, moreover, there are only finitely many such parabolic subgroups. As a corollary one gets that complete Kac-Moody groups over finite fields satisfy the ascending chain condition for open subgroups. Furthermore, it also follows that for an irreducible complete Kac-Moody group \(G\) over a finite field every proper open subgroup of \(G\) is compact if and only if the Weyl group of \(G\) is of affine or of compact hyperbolic type. The proofs use some new results on parabolic closures in Coxeter groups, in particular, the authors provide conditions which guarantee that the parabolic closure of the product of two elements in a Coxeter group contains the respective parabolic closures of the original elements.
