The aim of this note is to present a `very simple original, purely formal, proof' of Quillen's adjunction theorem for derived functors [\textit{D. G. Quillen}, ``Homotopical algebra'', Lect. Notes Math. 43 (1967; Zbl 0168.20903)], and some more recent variations and generalizations of this theorem [\textit{M. Hovey}, ``Model categories'', Math. Surv. Monogr. 63 (1999; Zbl 0909.55001), \textit{P.S. Hirschhorn}, ``Model categories and their localizations'', ibid. 99 (2003; Zbl 1017.55001), \textit{W. G. Dwyer, P. S. Hirschhorn, D. M. Kan} and \textit{J. H. Smith}, ``Homotopy limit functors on model categories and homotopical categories'', ibid. 113 (2004; Zbl 1072.18012), \textit{A. Radulescu-Banu}, ``Cofibrations in homotopy theory'', Preprint, math/0610009 (2006)]. This proof is obtained by proving an abstract adjunction theorem for 'absolute' derived functors. In the contrast with all known proofs, the explicit construction of the derived functors is not used. The `absolute derived functors' are non-additive generalization of Deligne's `everywhere defined derived functors'.
