By a uniserial module \(M\) over a valuation domain \(R\) we mean one in which the submodules of \(M\) are linearly ordered under set inclusion. A uniserial module is said to be standard if it is isomorphic to the quotient of a fractional ideal of \(R\) by another one. The main question considered in this paper is: given a uniserial module \(U\) and a standard module \(W\), does there exist a module \(V\) which contains an isomorphic copy of \(W\) such that \(V/W\) is isomorphic to \(U\) and if such a \(V\) exists, is that unique? A module such as \(V\) above is called an elongation of \(U\) by \(W\). In section 1, non-standard uniserial modules are classified into 6 classes while section 2 deals with elongations of standard uniserial modules. In theorem 3.4 elongations of a nonstandard uniserial by a standard one is considered while in theorem 3.5 the uniqueness upto isomorphism is established.
