Let \(K\) be a field. The paper studies maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules over the hypersurface ring \(K[[x,y]]/(x^n)\), for \(n\) at least three. Infinite families of non-isomorphic indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of arbitrary number of minimal generators or of arbitrary rank are constructed in terms of matrix factorizations of \(x^n\) times an identity matrix. The starting point for the construction is a classification of nilpotent matrices over \(K[[y]]\), which was carried out by the first author. It is not difficult to describe the families of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules which are studied and it is not difficult to see that the modules are non-isomorphic. The hard work occurs in showing that the modules are indecomposable. All of the difficulty occurs already at \(n=3\): the general case follows quickly from this case.
