Let \(X\) be a complex projective variety and \(D\) be a Cartier divisor on \(X\). For any holomorphic map \(f: \mathbb{C}\rightarrow X\) whose image is not contained in the support of \(D\), define the proximity function of \(f\) with respect to \(D\) by \[ m_f(r, D)=\int_0^{2\pi}\lambda_D(f(re^{i\theta}))\frac{d\theta}{2\pi}, \] where \(\lambda_D\) is a Weil function with respect to \(D\). If \(D\) is ample, define the characteristic function of \(f\) with respect to \(\mathcal{O}(D)\) by \[ T_{f, D}(r)=\int_1^r\int_{|z|\leq t} (f^*\omega) \frac{dt}{t}, \] where \(\omega\) is the Chern form of the line bundle \(\mathcal{O}(D)\). In the paper under review, the authors refine the concept of subgeneral position by introducing the notion of the index of subgeneral position. With this new notion the authors improve \textit{M. Ru}'s theorem in [Ann. Math. (2) 169, No. 1, 255--267 (2009; Zbl 1184.32006)] as follows. Theorem. Let \(X\) be a complex projective variety with \(\dim X=n\), and let \(D_1, \dots, D_q\) be effective Cartier divisors in \(m\)-subgeneral position with index \(\kappa >1\) on \(X\). Suppose that there exists an ample divisor \(A\) on \(X\) and positive integers \(d_j\) such that \(D_j\sim d_jA\) for \(j=1,\dots, q\). Let \(f: \mathbb{C}\rightarrow X\) be an algebraically non-degenerate holomorphic curve. Then, for every \(\varepsilon>0\), \[ \sum^q_{j=1}\frac{1}{d_j}m_f(r, D_j)\le \left(\max\left\{\frac{m}{2\kappa}, 1\right\}(n+1)+\varepsilon\right)T_{f, A}(r) \] holds for all large \(r\) outside a set of finite Lebesgue measure. Moreover, the authors improve Quang's theorem and extend the result of \textit{M. Ru} and \textit{P. Vojta} [Am. J. Math. 142, No. 3, 957--991 (2020; Zbl 1457.32044)] to arbitrary effective divisors in subgeneral position. In the final section, the authors also establish the corresponding Schmidt's subspace type theorems via the analogy between Nevanlinna theory and Diophantine approximation.
