A field has the Northcott property if it contains only finitely many elements of bounded Weil height. Examples of infinite extensions of the rationals having the Northcott property were given by \textit{E. Bombieri} and \textit{U. Zannier} [Atti Accad. Naz. Lincei, Cl. Sci. Fis. Mat. Nat., IX. Ser., Rend. Lincei, Mat. Appl. 12, No. 1, 5--14 (2001; Zbl 1072.11077)]. The author presents a sufficient condition for a union of fields to have the Northcott property, and deduces new examples of such fields. He shows in particular that if \(p_1<p_2<\dots\) is a sequence of primes and \(d_j\) (\(j\geq1\)) are positive integers, then the field \(\mathbb Q(p_1^{1/d_1},p_2^{1/d_2},\dots)\) has the Northcott property if and only if \(\lim_{n\to\infty}p_n^{1/d_n}=\infty\).
