The authors study the existence of solution of the boundary value problem \[(\Phi(a(t,x(t))\,x'(t)))' = f(t,x(t), x'(t)), \; t \in I=[0,T],\; x(0) = \nu_1; \;x(T) =\nu_2\] where \(\nu_1\), \(\nu_2 \in {\mathbb R}\), \(\Phi: {\mathbb R} \to {\mathbb R}\) is an increasing homeomorphism, \(f\) is a Carathéodory function on \(I\times {\mathbb R}^2\), \(a\) is a nonnegative continuous function on \(I\times {\mathbb R}\) such that \(a(t,x) \ge h(t)\) for every \(t \in I\) and \(x\in {\mathbb R}\), where \(h\in C(I)\) is nonnegative and \(1/h\in L^p(I)\) for some \(p>1\). The results follow by applying the lower and upper solutions method. Existence results for other kind of nonlinear boundary conditions have been also proved. In this case the existence of solution is deduced from the existence of solutions of suitable non homogeneous Dirichlet problems
